Wait Five Minutes... and a little Harvest for Monday

I can't get too upset for too long.  It truly is the case here in St. Louis, if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes. The weather changes quicker than you'd think.  So the snow covered garden did no harm (that I am aware of) to my garden.  Here it is basking in some sunlight (the tomatoes and peppers are still safely tucked inside until potentially the weekend when we're expecting temps back in the 70s)

Before the snow was completely melted, the lettuce was hanging on...

I was able to get a harvest in the middle of the snow storm for another batch of egg drop soup.  I think my scallion harvests are a kind of, "in your face, snow" attempt.  It's little, but it's something, and it's green.

To check out what others are harvesting all over the world, check out Daphne's Dandelions!

I've got little sprouts up all over the place.

Black Seeded Simpson lettuce seedlings- I planted quite a few because it was two year old seed, looks like I'll be doing some thinning!

Something is already eating on one of my spinach transplants-- my spinach never got to this size last year. I'm hoping it does better with this compost! That is, if the bugs leave it alone!

  1. Fresh scallions are always a treat as the garden is just waking up from winters nap! The return of warmer weather quickly brings the return of the leaf eating pests. I found some nibbling going on already in my gresns patch too.

  2. Your harvest may be little...but, it's a harvest! I'm sure that you enjoyed the wonderful flavor in your soup!

It seems like the weeds and bugs are the first to arrive in the spring.

  3. I hope those warmer temps make it here very soon - it was in the upper 20's this morning, my poor broccoli and artichokes! I have the artichokes covered with dome hats, hopefully they are ok, this late cold is crazy!

  6. I would love to have a scallion harvest. We had several snow storms last week and I'm happy that this week will be a touch warmer. Though sadly snow is still in the forecast. None of the snow is sticking anymore at least. Thank goodness for small favors.

  7. kitsapFG- I could certainly do without the pests! I guess I was spoiled by my Aerogarden... No leaf eating ones in the house besides US!

Robin- I did enjoy it, and it's definitely nice to decide to add a flavor to something and have it right there, without a trip to the grocery store.

Erin- This late cold IS crazy, it was crazy WARM this time last year, and I feel like I got spoiled in the mix! I hope your broccoli and artichokes are okay!

jezibels- you definitely would be ending up with our weather! You probably end up with more wind though!

ali- It's strange how angry snow can make you when you just want to be seeing green!

Daphne- I'm glad to hear you're getting a touch of warmer weather. I wouldn't have thought the snow would really stick here either, after several days in the upper 70s low 80s... at least it didn't hang around for long! Your garden will be producing LOADS for you in no time!
